United Way of Miami-Dade Completes Distribution of Miami-Dade County CARES Act Funds

The County allocated relief funds to residents facing financial hardship due to COVID-19 

Miami-Dade County partnered with United Way of Miami-Dade tprovide hard-working individuals and families with emergency assistance and relief during the coronavirus pandemic, allocatin$29.1 million in CARES Act relief funds for distribution. Developed by the County, The Miami-Dade Pandemic Assistance Program aims to address short-term economic hardship through financial assistance for basic living expenses such as food, utilities, childcare, medical expenses and rental assistance among others.  

With 5 out of 10 households (54%) in Miami-Dade County living in, or one emergency away from, poverty, the pandemic has exacerbated an already difficult situation for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) individuals and families.*

We are proud to have partnered with Miami-Dade County to deploy additional resources to tens of thousands of individuals in our community,” Maria C. Alonso, president and CEO, United Way of Miami-Dade, said. “A massive undertaking led by our United Way team with the able assistance of five nonprofit agency partners, the team reviewed 23,812 applications, responded to 8,662 emails and answered 6,896 calls – many times providing guidance to other assistance programs available through the County and municipalities. 

 

 

Impact by the Numbers (as of January 14):  

  • $29.1 million in relief funds distributed  
  • 18,500+ households representing 60,000+ individuals, including children, older adults and veterans were positively impacted 
  • 1,900+ volunteers recruited clocking in 6,700+ hours of volunteer work through various food distributions and kit packing drives (food and care kits) 
    • 50,000+ families received food and care kits

The Miami-Dade Pandemic Assistance Program, funded by the federal CARES Act, aims to help ALICE individuals and families impacted by the economic fallout of the pandemic crisis including job hour reductions, furloughs and layoffs. Individuals and/or families who experienced a significant loss of income, became unemployed, underemployed and/or experienced unexpected expenses as a result of COVID-19 and are residents of Miami-Dade County applied for assistance online.
